3 Signs That You Need Cataract Surgery

Posted on

If your eye doctor has told you that you have cataracts, you could be debating between having surgery and just dealing with them. Although some people do decide that surgery is not for them, there is a good chance that your life can be improved if you do seek treatment. These are a few signs that you might benefit strongly from having cataract surgery done on your eyes.

1. You Can't Drive Safely

If your cataracts are blocking your vision so that you cannot drive safely -- either because you have trouble seeing the road or because you have a problem with a glare at nighttime -- then you should not drive until you seek treatment. If you have not noticed any problems with driving but have recently been unable to renew your driver's license because you cannot pass the vision test, there is a good chance that cataract surgery can help as well.

2. You Suffer From Double Vision

One common symptom that many people with cataracts suffer from is double vision. Double vision can be extremely uncomfortable and can cause you to feel disoriented. It can also seriously affect your day to day life and can make it difficult for you to do normal tasks. If you have suffered from double vision a few times in the past and have cataracts, there is a good chance that you will continue to suffer from this symptom. For patients who have cataracts but no other eye problems, cataract surgery is often enough to put a stop to the double vision for good.

3. You Have Other Eye Problems

In some cases, cataracts alone are not a very big deal. If you have other eye problems, however, your cataracts can make them worse. For example, if you have diabetes and suffer from diabetic retinopathy, or if you are suffering from macular degeneration and also have cataracts, it's important to have your cataracts removed to help prevent added vision problems.

Although some people opt not to have surgery for their cataracts, there are many situations in which it truly is your best option to seek this treatment. If you are unsure of whether or not cataract surgery is the right option for you, or if you would like to learn more about this procedure, then you should schedule an eye surgeon like Northwest Ophthalmology to have an eye exam and to find out more.
